Who knew that making people LOL could be such a huge money-maker? If you haven’t seen the Southwest airlines flight attendant comedy video, you may be one of the last people on earth, but you should check this out anyway:

While you’re LOLing and ROFLing, let’s see what we can take from this video:

  1. Laughter is contagious.
  2. Flying and buying are stressful experiences: decrease your customers’ natural stress by bringing friendly calmness and good humor to the buying experience.
  3. Laughter is the best medicine for reducing stress hormones produced in the brain and significant reductions can occur in minutes and last for days. So basically, a salesperson can be as effective as a therapist!
  4. Happiness (in the form of humor especially) breeds loyalty.
  5. Take your work seriously but not yourself.

A sense of humor can go a long way and sometimes it can even make a whole deal come together. Laughter breathes life into unmotivated buyers, giving every salesperson the edge when it comes to building customer relationships. On top of that, bonding and rapport is much simpler when relating to customers and allows salespeople to tip the scale when making the sale.

The success of Southwest Airlines serves as irrefutable evidence that funny can equal money, if done correctly.

So go ahead, lighten up, work hard and change someone’s world!

Happy Selling!

  1. This is an excellent point. In addition to humor and laughter helping the sales process to be more successful, making the sales process enjoyable for the customer will also help to change the impression that many people have of salespeople as trying to trick them out of their money. Can you imagine a world where people actually look forward to being sold something by a salesperson?

  2. As an accounting & finance major, I have yet to see this equation but I do believe it is true. Humor can not only put people at ease but it often shows a vulnerability that many will be more willing to trusts you. Trust = Sales
