I am a big Penn State football fan and I was very excited about the recruiting class we would have this year, which included Quinn Nordin the #1 Kicker in the country. PSU has had severe kicking problems for the past few years and the fix seemed to be on its way to Happy Valley.

That is until Jim Harbaugh got a hold of him.

Coach Harbaugh is notorious for doing whatever it takes to get the best recruits in the country. This is best characterized by his recruiting efforts with Quinn Nordin. The Coach called Quinn to tell him he would be visiting the following week and that he would be attending every class with him and going to lunch. Afterwards Coach Harbaugh said he would have a sleepover at his house and sleep on the recruit’s floor.

“He said we can watch a movie, see how well we gel and he said he would sleep over after that,” Nordin told Scout.com. “I was in tears laughing when he said that. He said the next day, if my parents didn’t want me to miss school, he would go to every class with me and go to lunch with me. I was laughing so hard.” “I said ‘Coach, I have Penn State stuff all over my walls.’ He said, ‘Tell you what, I can help you take it down.'”

As ridiculous as this sounds Nordin decommitted from PSU and is enrolled at the University of Michigan for the fall, where he joins Coach Harbaugh #5 recruiting class in the country. I guess the joke is on all of us.

  1. Going to such an extent to recruit an athlete is quite impressive and, well, kind of weird. I mean, spending the night at the kids house? That’s kind of crazy but I guess everyone has their own sales methods that work. The joke is definitely on all of us!

  2. I really like how you incorporated a real-life example of sales into this post! Sales doesn’t always involve physical products, sometimes, like in this example, it can even involve a person and their skills.
