Over spring break, I had the opportunity to get a new phone. (Somehow my old phone made it two and a half years.) I went into Verizon this past week – kind of dreading the situation I was walking into because I usually do not have great experiences with their sales staff. In the past, they have been very pushy. But I was pleasantly surprised with the salesman I dealt with. He approached me and asked me if he could help me find anything. I told him that I was looking at getting a new phone. He asked me what I was looking for in a phone and I told him that I am an iPhone user who loves taking pictures and having a lot of storage room for apps and photos. He told me that he thought I would be best suited with either the iPhone XR or the iPhone 8+. He showed me the phones and let me play around with them. While I waited, he asked me how my day had been and was a good conversationalist. After analyzing the phones for a few minutes, I told him that I thought I would go with the 8+. He told me he would be right back with some information to help me make sure I was making the right decision. He came back with some prices and storage amounts listed and told me to look them over. He never once said “I think you should get this one because…”. He simply listened to what I was looking for, showed me what he thought would be the best few options based on my needs, and totally let me make the decision of which phone I was going to purchase on my own. He then asked me if I wanted a screen protector or case for the phone and I said that I wanted both. He proceeded to tell me that the iPhone 8+ has a glass back to it and showed me some of the cases that might help to protect it more. After I chose a case, he put it and the screen protector on for me without a charge. My Verizon experience was great this time because the salesperson I got was not pushy or arrogant and truly listened to my needs.

  1. It sounds like this salesman is great at Sandler Rule 13. He didn’t try to “read your mind” and assume he knew what it was you wanted. It’s refreshing to hear about a phone salesman with your best interests in mind. I hope to have an experience like this when I buy a new phone this summer!
