Today in class we went beyond the 30 second commercial and learned the importance of the 10 second hook. Basically this is a short description of what you do, said in a way that engages the client or person who asked you. When someone asks the question, “what do you do?” We often say something more generic so that they can understand what we are talking about. However, it is better to differentiate yourself.

Here are some tips to differentiate yourself when asked, “what do you do?”

  • Make it exciting
    • Basically you want them to be interested in what you do. Start of with telling a story or quoting a startling fact.
  • Leave them wanting
    • You want to give them the ability to ask more questions about what you do, that way you can talk further about it.
  • Address a pain you are solving
    • You want to establish the purpose and reason why you do what you do.
  • Observe the other person
    • Show interest in what they do as well. Observe their environment, body language, and verbal cues.

  1. Nice work. I like your first point. Without making it exciting, there is no hope of moving forward in the relationship and ultimately the sale. You meet so many people in the business world and having an exciting intro will make you stand out.

  2. I think some of the best ten second hooks are the ones that you have no idea where they are going with it. Addressing a complex pain is enticing to the listener, and like you said, leaves them wanting more.
