My family once made a trip to REI to purchase a backpack for my sister before she departed on a three-month mission trip to Asia. In the backpack section of the store a guy that talked like a hippie and had long hair asked us what kind of backpack we needed. He asked questions about what we were looking for, where the backpack would be going, and what it would be used for. He showed us different backpacks they sold, told us about times he and others he knew had used each one on a trip, and what they liked and disliked about each. He told us which ones would work specifically for the trip my sister was taking, and we came to a decision we were very happy with. He said they sell sacks to keep the backpack safe while it’s in storage on the airplane, but he recommended getting a cheaper one elsewhere as it will work just as well. He was friendly, knowledgeable, honest, listened to what we were looking for, and cracked jokes as we checked out. We purchased the backpack, told his boss how helpful he was, then left the store happy with our purchase and ready to return if we ever need another backpack.

  1. Hi Oliver, I think that’s great that you had a pleasant sales experience, especially since that isn’t always the case. I’m glad that your sister ended up with a reliable, durable backpack that she could take with her during her trip to Asia. I hope that I’ll have a pleasant selling experience with a hippie one day.

  2. I think it is really cool how transparent the sales representative was with you and your family. I’m sure if he wasn’t, you probably would buy from somewhere else. I also think it’s so cool how attentive he was in asking questions and listening to you all. Great post/story!
