Have you ever had a terrible sales experience, where the person that is trying to sell to you just does not care about what you want at all? It is a pretty terrible experience. I feel like every customer knows that this is terrible, yet when people get into a sales job they have no empathy or feeling at all towards what the customer actually wants and is passionate about.

I sat down for a conversation with a friend, coach and mentor; The one and only Zac Jew, and asked him what his biggest take away is from his years of working in sales. He said ” You need to identify your customers passions and honestly, and truthfully sell him on those areas he is passionate about.” His reasoning was this, ” When you really play into the customers passions, you find out what they really want. The customers knows that you are genuinely trying to help them make the choice that they want to make.” This is completely true! Sales is all about the customer, yes you want to make sales, and yes you want to make some money; but the best way to do this is to fervently pursue getting your customer exactly what they want.

Whenever you really care about your customer, you want to find out what they are after so you can better help them achieve it. The worst thing you can do as a salesman is just push your product and/ or service on the customer. If you figure out the customers passions you can help them to the best of your ability.

  1. Passion seems like a powerful vertical sellers can utilize. I think this is why niche-based products are so successful: they target customer segments of a particular passion. Another benefit of selling based on passion is relationship building. A customer will likely trust you more if you relate to their passions.
