This movie scene comes from the Wolf of Wall Street (so sorry about any profane terms or themes), but I think it is a perfect example of how a “conventional” sales person sells.

While this scene is only from a movie, it is based on a true story and the actual actions and behaviors of the so called “Wolf of Wall street” Jordan Belfort. For those who do not know, Jordan Belfort was a stock trader who founded a stock brokerage fund, called Stratton Oakmont and sold stocks to other people.

This scene is great on so many levels: you immediately get a sense of just how good of a salesman Belfort (Dicaprio) is when selling his product, which is a stock in an extremely small startup company. What strikes me most about the scene is how well researched Belfort is about the company and his overall confidence on selling the product.

While Belfort is not being entirely honest when selling this product to the client (which is wrong and not ethically correct), he is able to convince his client of the opportunity of investing in the startup company.

I think that some of these principles can be applied to honest and mutually-beneficial transactions between two parties: the main ones being confident and well-researched about your product. Being confident and well-informed about your product allows you to provide clientele with the best information possible and helps you solve these problems more effectively. While Belfort’s sales style is not perfect, it is fun to analyze these examples and try to learn sales strategies from some of these personalities.
