A recent sales experience was with a young gentleman from Florida who is starting to think about college. His sister is a student here and she asked if me and my buddies would be willing to host him for two nights. I love this school and was happy to do my best and show him the best side of Grove City College. To be honest, I was a little intimidated by this perspective student. He seemed like a super cool guy and I didn’t want to screw things up for his sister, so I tried to take things slow. I asked him questions slowly and did my best to not push too hard. I took him to the garage with a few friends and he started to open up a bit. When it was time for us to go back I asked him if he played any video games (I had an idea). He listed a few that he played including one that I play. I extended an invitation to him to play together and he agreed. So we started to play a few games and this allowed me to ask a few questions without scaring him off. I still took it slow, but he was much more happy to talk and I could start to identify what he was looking for in a college and what he wanted out of his college experience. Through our conversation, I was able to figure out that football was pretty important to him, so I got an idea. I remembered that Coach Didonato met with students because of his time in our sales class. I sent him an email (last minute) and he graciously agreed to meet with and talk to him before he left for the airport that same day. He came back from his time with Coach sounding encouraged and excited, so hopefully we will see him on campus in 2 years. I guess we will just have to see.

  1. That was a very clever approach you made on getting to know some of his interest without coming off too strong. Hopefully he’ll remember those moments when making his decision for colleges.

Good post and good work! I hope this prospective student comes to Grove- he’d have a great time.
