Are you considering becoming a salesperson? It may seem like a dying profession, but chances are, you already are one. “Why?” you may ask. Well, for starters, selling isn’t about products. As Daniel Pink puts it, selling is about moving people. Now this doesn’t mean physically moving people, but rather convincing someone to do something. This obviously includes buying, but it also includes…everything else.

For example, have you ever had to convince your parents to let you do something? Did you try to persuade them? Did you use logic and reasoning along with some creative tactics, and even emotion? Boom. You’re a salesperson. (Even if your parents didn’t give in).
Here’s another one: Have you ever interviewed for a job? Did you list your strengths to convince the company to hire you? Did you have conversations where you had to improvise and think on your feet? Boom. You’re a salesperson. (Even if you didn’t get hired).

Basically, any time you try to persuade or convince anyone of anything, you’re a salesperson. Though the profession itself seems to be waning because of the lack of door-to-door or in-store salespeople, it is actually growing. All people are salespeople when you think of it in terms of the reasoning above.

Take this blog as another example. You could look at this as me persuading you to read my blog by means of being interesting. If you’re still reading, that means I’ve sold you on it. If not… womp-womp for me.

To close this little blog post, I’ll ask you to think about a few things:
1. In what areas of your life are you selling?
2. How are you being sold to on a day-to-day basis?

Hopefully with this newfound understanding of sales, you will be able to see how it applies to your own life. Until next time!

  1. Great post! I did think that sales jobs were not nearly as common as they were in the past but throughout the beginning of this class and this post it shows me that that is not even close to the case. It was a cool way to tie the blog post around by showing that by doing this blog post it is actually a version of sales.

  2. Thanks for the entertaining read! to answer your questions: 1, when I truly think about it, selling is everywhere in my life. It seeps into social, spiritual, and academic aspects. 2, Just like I’m constantly selling, I’m being sold to on the opposite side of the same coin. Whenever I go anywhere or do anything with anyone, we try to persuade people to adopt our ideas. Keep up the good work. Have a great week.
