Picture ordering from Chick-Fil-A. I can almost guarantee you all thought of the same thing. You probably thought of a teenager or a young adult in a red shirt being unbelievably personable, efficient, and, of course, saying “my pleasure” about 20 times. This is not by accident. New Chick-Fil-A employees are taught a concept known as “The Core 4”. The Core 4 are as follows:  creating eye contact, sharing a smile, making a personal connection, and speaking with enthusiasm. Anyone in our class should realize these are just 4 basic sales techniques! Chick-Fil-A is teaching their employees classic sales techniques, helping the company cultivate a positive global reputation. I have worked at Chick-Fil-A for 5 years now and I can confidently say that the Core 4 has bled into every other area of my life. When I was first hired at 15, I thought the Core 4 was  a stupid gimmick that I just had to do when I was clocked in; but now, thankfully, these techniques have worked their way into my every-day routine. This has been such a blessing when it comes to networking for my future career and just meeting people at college. So, once you are done reading this blog post, try to implement one (or four) of the Core 4: eye contact, smile, personal connection, and speaking with enthusiasm!

  1. I think that the simplicity of the core four is very interesting. None of these things require a significant amount of thought. I even noticed that simply a smile goes a long way. This shows that even elementary steps can be taken to create a more friendly sales environment.
