In class on Wednesday, Evan Addams spoke to us about his experience with sales and important lessons. He graduated in 2010 and said that he has been selling his whole like. He explained that being a salesperson is about partnering with the client to figure out they can discover the best solution. Addams also talked about No Wait. Yelp bought No Wait because of their sales process. The people working for No Wait were intentional with each of their clients. Addams shared how they would spend their weekends at restaurants helping the staff implement their new system. Plus, he would listen to the staff and managers to learn why they like and need the service– he listened to what they valued.
Addams also shared a few lessons. First, embrace the non scalable things. No Wait built trust and relationships through their service. Having a member go to restaurants on the weekends is not practical for a large scale business, but it allowed No Wait to get ahead and if it was never done, then No Wait would never take off. Secondly, the MVP is super important. It is not all about perfection, but rather what the market wants and is buying at that time. Third, create the world how it ought to be. As Christians, we called to partner with people and help them along God’s path for them. It is vital to think like them, which is done through listening. Lastly, Addams tells us to be a challenger. This means to be bold and break through.
I thought Adams was a great speaker and loved hearing him talk. I specifically liked how he mentioned his deal with the restaurants and how he would go and spend a few hours personally with them to show how his product worked. Although it took up a lot of time, it became a huge reward.
