In the sales world, failure is feared and often avoided at high costs. But if you take a step back and look at the overall aspect of failing in sails, you should have a totally different view than expected. Failure is just a step in one’s sales journey, inevitable and necessary. Failing is actually so important because it allows for growth and leads to eventual success.

One of the most valuable aspects of failure is the insight that it provides to the salesperson. Most rejections are not a loss but rather a functional failure. What I mean by this is that your strategy, prospecting, timing, and pitch, didn’t work but it doesn’t mean you are a bad salesperson. The failure is a way to show you things you can refine and tweak so that your next sale can be better. By viewing failure as a necessary step rather than just plain failure it can allow you to remain discouraged and use it to your advantage. To not let failure discourage you, you have to detach your emotional connection to hearing the yes so you can help your sales in the future.

All in all, failure is just really good information. It is not meant to be feared; it is just more information to be applied. Without failure, you wouldn’t be able to learn new information about what works. Failure, in general, teaches the character about resilience and builds your personality so that you can easily bounce back.

Failure is not an enemy but rather much different but a friend. Don’t take failure personally because it’s part of the process and everybody experiences it. Stay focused on the growth and improvement. So next time you fail realize it’s just another step in achieving your goals and about learning how to win by failing.

  1. I like to think of it that nothing is truly a failure if you managed to learn something from it. Granted it can waste time and money, but, as college tuition prices show, learning tends to have costs anyway.

  2. This is a really cool post because you can apply it to any part of life, not just sales. Whether it is a rejection or a missed opportunity, in sports, failure always offers the opportunity for growth and should be embraced.

  3. Failure is not only something that someone can learn from, but I think it is a necessity in order to learn. Once you fail at something, you should learn why you failed and never make that same mistake again. This builds barriers for you to not cross and helps you become a more effective sales person
