In class on 2/12 Prof. Sweet talked about mimicry and body language and I thought it would be interesting to see what kinds of online resources there might be for instruction on this topic. I know many of us are naturally able to read body language. Some things are pretty easy to distinguish. Often we can easily identify when a person is upset or sad. But I am curious about the subtle things and what those things mean.
On one website, the author spoke of the risk involved if you do not know what someone is thinking. I had never thought about the idea of a risk to me, but it is true. If we do not know what someone is thinking, we may “spill all the candy” or miss out on a sale because of not knowing what they are thinking.
From my reading it seems that we can detect an issue non-verbally before there is a verbal expression of a problem if we pay close attention. This could be really helpful if you can sense something before something is spoken and can mitigate an issue before an is voiced.
There are signs to look for to tell if someone likes you or not. There are signs to look for to see if someone is lying to you. One article said that it is not so hard verbally tell a lie, but a lot harder to cover the emotions that often come along with a lie.
There are also ways to tell if someone is trustworthy or not. One thing that was first mentioned is how important it is to build trust. Professor Sweet has talked about this quite a lot in class. However, there are times when we don’t necessarily have time to build a relationship and we have to make a decision quickly. If this case there are subtle clues to watch for in determining whether or not someone is trustworthy.
There is so much information available on reading body language that GCC could make a whole course on it I suppose!
I really like how you talked about being able to sense if someone is lying based on their body language. I feel I am very good at that, especially when it’s coming from someone I’m close with. My favorite genres are crime shows and psychological thrillers because they always test this theory and make me think, who is lying and who is not?
Super interesting stuff Gwen! I just put up a post about Mirror Neurons that might help provide some more insight into this topic. How we view emotions often comes from our own experience of them. It is truly wild how much our own bodies can reveal, even if our minds try to hide things!
Great Post! I agree it is interesting to understand the impact body language can have on a conversation. This can be seen within many conversations not only just in sales. For example one may not realize they seem upset but there body language portrays that to someone they are in conversation with.
