My very first job was working as a hostess at a restaurant when I was 14. After many awkward interactions with the customers and refusing to answer any phone calls, they placed me in the back where the bus station resided. My job was easy, clean tables and put the dirty dishes in the bins to take them to the dishwasher. That was my main job, but it was fresh out of the pandemic, and they were understaffed badly. The owners saw I was quick on my feet and called me over to the expo and handed me a plate of food.

Shortly, I was working both as a runner and a busser going in and out of the kitchen to the outdoor patio in 80+ degree weather. One day I was serving a table some water and they asked me about the menu and how it worked since the restaurant was using QR codes for ordering food at the time. They were very nice people, and they ended up expressing how much they enjoyed their meals. Right before I left to go back and check on the expo, I was asked by the lady, “how are the deserts?”

I should give some context. I’ve never worked in a restaurant before and had only been working for about a month at this point. Nobody trained me on how give a sale on food, and I was also incredibly picky.

I had referred to our dessert menu with a smile in hopes they will figure it out so I could go back and do my job. However, I was stopped again before I could even pivot myself in my worn-out converse. “How is the blueberry cobbler?” Again, I smiled and took a breath, “I’ve only had it once and I didn’t like it. But everyone else says they liked it. Totally up to you if you want to try it, don’t listen to me.”

Awkward glances were exchanged and the lady across from me just said “oh! heh.”

I fear that I might’ve been the reason that desert was taken off the menu…

  1. Thank you for sharing this story! Even in the small moments, you are a salesperson. Being honest helped you to build a relationship with the customer. I think if you offered another dessert instead of the blueberry cobbler, they might have went with that. This is kind of really funny though!
