First impressions are crucial for sales. In any situation, not just sales, a first impression can be the difference between immediately getting along with someone or making an enemy. What is a first impression? It is an immediate opinion you form of someone that often takes one to two minutes to create. Several factors impact what kind of first impression you make. First of all, appearance does matter. Since you may not be the one doing much talking the first time you meet someone, physical appearance and body language are essential. Other things like a firm handshake and word choice will also impact the first impression.

A first impression is crucial for several reasons. First, people often remember the first part of their interaction with you. In today’s world, people have very short attention spans, so even the first 30 seconds may be the most memorable. People are also more observant at first because they are more curious to know you. Furthermore, if you initially portray positive aspects about yourself, people will be more likely to remember this. Excellent and terrible first impressions are very memorable. If you leave an outstanding first impression with someone, you could be the one who sticks about above all other candidates to make a sale or get a job. Also, think back to a time when you just met somebody, and they looked horrible, or swore at you, or smelled awful. You will remember the bad traits about that person whether you want to or not. First impressions are also crucial to networking and referrals.

As you can see, these aspects are all critical to sales. If you make a bad first impression, making a sale will be very hard. Both long-term and short-term sales would be difficult.

  1. I could not agree more with you about the importance of first impressions in sales. It is very difficult to build a relationship if the initial impression of someone is bad and since sales is all about relationships with the customer, a good first impression is crucial. This can be difficult for me since it can take a few times of me meeting someone to warm up to them. Making a good first impression is definitely something I am working on.

    1. I absolutely agree first impressions are crucial in sales and many other areas of life. They form within the first one to two minutes and are influenced by many factors. A positive first impression can help you stand out, while a negative one can be hard to overcome.

  2. this is definitely important, if, for whatever reason, a customer immediately dislikes you, then they are significantly less likely to be willing to answer question or complete the sale.

  3. I agree with your statement that first impressions can be very important in the sales world. First impressions matter not only in the sales world but outside of sales too. When people think about you they usually are reminded of the first time you met and how you approached them.
