Success in sales greatly depends on more than just knowing the product you’re selling or simply having strong communication skills. Staying positive, adaptable, and persistent plays a huge role in achieving results in sales. Sales can, however, be unpredictable, and rebounding from bad days, weeks, months, or even years is essential in the sales business. Rejection is a very common part of sales as not every customer will end up being a sale. People who let rejection and “no” weigh them down often struggle to stay motivated and keep going. Other salespeople stay upbeat and keep going even after failing to increase the chance of their success. These salespeople see rejection as part of a self-betterment process as opposed to a reason to quit their job. This isn’t however to say that if you are making no sales you should just maintain a positive attitude and keep doing what you’re doing, but to learn from mistakes you make. Being able to adjust to different situations is very important as a salesperson. The best salesmen don’t resist change but they embrace it. Sales is also about trust as customers can sense when a salesperson is confident and steady, even in intense conversations and back-and-forth. Someone who stays composed and positive creates a strong connection with clients as people prefer to buy from someone who is reliable and seems strong and confident in what they are selling, rather than someone who is unsure or not confident in what they are presenting to consumers. A Successful salesperson knows that challenges will come, but when they have buoyancy, they rebound, get back on their feet, and stay afloat no matter what because they know that there will always be more opportunities around the corner and that one failure can’t affect future attitude or outlook on potential leads or sales.

  1. I really agree that buoyancy is so important when it comes to sales. (read my recent post The Tomato Incident) But being able to bounce back from a poor situation, or when something doesn’t quite pan out how you might have envisioned it, is such an important human interaction skill to have.

  2. Great post! Buoyancy us extremely important especially in a field such as sales where there you hear a lot of nos. Also being confident as a salesperson is huge in order to show the customer that you believe in the product you are selling.

  3. I especially like the idea of staying adaptable because of the fact that no two customers are the same, and often you’ll have to tailor the sale to their liking, and thinking on your feet helps you make the sale or at least, solve their problem.

  4. I agree that buoyancy is extremely important when it comes to the sales world and being a salesman/saleswoman. It is also very important that you come back from negative situations and negative sales opportunities.
