For most of these blog posts, I’ve been doing research on sales techniques for videography businesses, because I’m currently working on growing my own. Today, I watched a video called “How to Cold Call for your Videography Business”. Throughout the video, he called multiple car dealerships trying to land new clients. I’m going to break down his method and talk about how his tactics can be applied to any sales situation.
In each call, he was offering to come out and shoot a free video. He would say “I’m a local videographer and I was wondering if you would be interested in a free shoot”. It’s hard for people to say no to free things, so I think this is a great idea. In sales, if there’s a way to give someone a taste of the product for free or let them try it before committing, I think that’s something that you should absolutely be implementing.
He also was very casual when he was talking to the businesses. He talked to them like they were already acquainted and didn’t sound like a salesman at all. He was upfront about his intentions – if they liked the free video then maybe they could work together in the future. I think that’s another aspect that we can learn from. In sales, it’s always good to be upfront about your intentions because that builds trust.
There was one call where the lady said that they already have a person that does it. At that point, it would have been really easy for him to say “ok” and end it there. He instead asked if he could talk to a manager about it and said that he’s willing to shoot for free and they can decide if they’d like to work with him or not. He was persistent in a non-pushy way which I think is also very important.
Great post! It’s good to see cold calling in a way that is not construed as negative or pushy. It can be really intimidating to work on cold calling, so seeing it done in a laid back manner sounds really helpful!
