When I was younger my best friend Sophia, and her sister Lily, owned a Chicken business. Thier company’s name was Lehman’s Chicks Catering. They had their own website up online and they did events such as our school auction and sold chicken in the town square. One summer specifically she made over a thousand dollars with the chicken business. Every spring the Lehman family would get a hundred little chicks and raise them to eventually sell them as their chicken. This was a brutal process, especially when I had to go over for butchering day. Butchering day was one day every summer where her family killed all the chickens. This was a family event. She had 27 first cousins and they all would show up to help out. If you were like me and invited to butchering day you most likely did not know it was butchering day. Her family had custom machines that help mass murder the chickens. They used to hang the chickens in Lilys basketball net, so the blood drained out. Her father Doug when he was a teenager would sell chicken outside of my great uncle’s store, Musser’s market. He did this for years day after day to provide for his family. From doing this he was able to get all nine of his siblings through college and grad school, now every one of his siblings including Doug himself is either a lawyer or doctor with all their school paid for by Doug. This small family business has impacted so many lives throughout the years. The chicken was always good and cooked to perfection after years of getting the right recipe down. This played a huge role in Doug’s life along with his kids, he was happy to pass down what made him and his siblings get through. Sophia and Lily as odd as it seems, have always been grateful for their Chicken experiences.

  1. That is awesome hearing the impact that Doug had on his family and his siblings through his hard work and his small business. A vast majority of businesses in the united states are small businesses and it is awesome that he is keeping that in the family and passing it down!

  2. Personally, I would have hated to be involved in any capacity in butchering day! It is very inspirational to see just how much good comes out of small businesses across America, and the impact they make on the community and especially close family, just like how Doug helped pay for all of their educations!

  3. This is a really interesting story. It’s impressive how a small chicken business not only became a family tradition but also helped support so many people along the way.
