Mary Kay Ash was a woman in business since back before 1963 where she was ranking up 50% of sales in businesses she was involved in. When she was not promoted over some of her peers, she decided it was time for a change and started her own business. Mary Kay has a solid business venture in cosmetics, and she got there through her solid determination to make a change in the business world for women and also with her excellent sales tactics used in the selling world.

Mary Kay has expressed some of her success in sales by abiding by some of the basic humanity techniques, for example, she often abides by the golden rule, “treat others the way you want to be treated.” Women and people in general just wanted to be treated well and not taken advantage of, especially when it comes to the business and sales world. She used this mentality to have great success in her business start-up and success throughout life. In addition, Mary Kay also expressed her desire to be an example and to also encourage others. Furthermore, another important factor is to “never, absolutely never, compromises your principles.” In sales, be sure to have solid principles and values and never stoop below them just to get a sale.

Always lift others up and be willing to care about who they are as people. Mary Kay said on her website that have the mindset that everyone is wearing a shirt that says, “Make me feel important.” Helping other people see their value in business and even when selling makes the interaction with them much more meaningful and successful regardless of if a transaction is made or not. Overall, just show genuine interest to your customers and it will make you feel better and them feel as though you are not just a pushy salesman. This may result in them being more drawn to your product in general.

  1. This is a testament to the fact that selling is so much more than just closing a sale. Integrity and trust are most important in the initial relationship between the seller and potential buyer. Instead of emphasizing the product and forcing it onto a buyer, it is much more personable to listen to what their needs are first and foremost. It is no surprise that Mary Kay became so successful following these ideals which helped her pave the way for many successful businesses to come. Showing genuine respect and interest to the potential helps move the sales funnel along in a way that flows well and shows that you value their needs.

  2. I think that this is such a valuable outlook for one to have. Having a constant mindset to keep everyone feeling important can only do good. It’s free to treat people well, and there is never ever any harm done in doing so.

  4. I like this blog post on Mary Kay. Its a good story that proves that selling is more than just adding another number to the sales chart. It is more of a personable relationship to listen to the customer first and find their needs and that figure out if they would be interested in your product or service.
