This past weekend I stopped by my old high school because they were performing a musical, Newsies.  I had no clue what the plot line was about until I got there.  It is about boys that would have to deliver newspapers to make a living.  They would buy a stack of papers from newspaper company, and then sell them on the streets.  However, the newspaper companies decided to raise their prices of the cost of buying newspapers for the boys (Newsies) to sell.  The Newsies were not happy with this at all, so they decided to protest.  The Manhattan Newsies rallied Newsies from all over New York City to boycott selling newspapers, but that is not all.  They also got child laborers to boycott work until they received fair living wages.

The Newsies found pain.  They found pain with the child workers and with the companies that employed the child laborers.  For the children, the Newsies found that pain stemmed from them having unsafe working conditions and getting little pay.  They used that to come alongside their target audience and to work with them to find a better solution.  For the companies, they found that the companies valued the work they were getting from the children more than other expenses, as those companies were shut down during the strike.  In the end, the Newsies were able to use the pain from both the children and the companies to come to a resolution that all the parties involved were satisfied with.

  1. This is a great example of nonsales selling. The Newsies were a group who found pain and were unhappy about their situation. They got together as a group and did something about it, coming to a satisfactory solution.

  2. It’s a unique way that you connected this musical to sales! Pain is relevant in all areas. The group of boys weren’t happy with their situation and found solutions to combat their issues. I also love this musical, so I enjoyed reading it.
