Today I am going to reflect on the effect positive thinking has on sales. The “Power of Positive Thinking” by Norman Vincent Peale is a popular self-help book about how to change your mind set for success. Peale shares 10 of the most powerful life lessons and I want to reflect on these lessons and how they can help you sell better. I will list the lessons and how they are helpful in connecting to sales as well.

  1. Believe in Yourself

This first lesson is important because confidence in your capabilities can help you display to your potential client that you are trustworthy and then that will help lead you to a successful sale. Self-confidence leads to better and stronger relationships between seller and buyer.

2. Focus on the Positive

This is important in sales because to be able to connect with your intended buyer you need to be excited about what you are talking about and bring positive engagement about your topic.

3. Practice Gratitude

This lesson is applicable to sales but not directly within your sales conversation. Practicing gratitude can help improve your mood and increase positivity with your attitude to selling.

4. Embrace Change

This lesson is especially applicable to sales. Sales conversations are never the exact same every time. You need to expect change in response and be able to think on your feet and embrace the challenge and change.

5. Take Action

Taking action in sales could mean setting the appointment and getting the sale. Taking the initiative to make the next step after your sales conversation.

6. Overcome Fear

Overcome fear and embracing the awkwardness in sales can be an important lesson to learn. As a leader and a seller, you are put in scary and new situations but how you embrace that and work through it displays strength in your abilities.

7. Surround Yourself with Positive People

This will lead you to more positivity and to have a better attitude when working.

8. Practice Visualization

This can be applicable in sales when you imagine making the sale and furthering a relationship with the potential buyer.

9. Overcome Negative Thoughts

This goes hand in hand with lesson 7. Who you surround yourself with impacts your mood and increases your ability to have joyful thoughts and not just negative. Shifting your focus is an effective way to accomplish this.

10. Never Give Up

Sales is challenging. Being a leader is challenging. Persistence and determination with a positive attitude helps you go the distance.

  1. I think this is a great post. One thing that is not explicitly mentioned but that each principle points to is embracing failure. Salespeople will always fail. It is part of the process. Many of these principles, like focusing on the positive, embracing change, and overcoming fear and negative thoughts, can help salesmen overcome failure.

  2. I think you have created a great list of big points related to positive thinking in sales. Especially with the point that you should believe in yourself. I would add in addition to that, that a salesman should not only believe in himself but also whatever product or service he is selling. Great post!

  3. i believe having a positive approach with anything is very valuable, especially in sales. having a possitive approach and mindset leads to better conversations and allows you to use positive sales approaches.
