One good example of sales portrayed in a movie is a scene with Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill in Moneyball. If you have watched the film, you know that Brad Pitt takes an Oakland Athletics team with the worst baseball budget and turns them around using a revolutionary strategy. In the clip above, you can see Jonah Hill explaining and pitching his data-driven strategy. This is an example of non-sales selling. Jonah Hill is not selling a product but selling Brad Pitt on the credibility of his idea.
This video is an example of a good sales pitch. There are two things I like about how Hill sells his strategy. While he is not a regular salesman, he is honest and believes in his product. He is calm and collected as he tells this to Brad Pitt, who is in danger of losing his job. This is an example of non-sales selling. I think one thing that helps Jonah Hill’s character is his credibility. He has a degree from Yale and has already landed a pretty impressive job.
This is not the only place in the movie where non-sales sell. Pitt does a good job of negotiating to sign players, which is not technically a sale but a negotiation. He is selling his team to players. Pitt must convince players to sign with the A’s for cheap and get ownership to give them more money to work worth. He learns and expresses that there is a balance between what others want and what you can provide in persuasion. He can convince ownership to sign some players because he finds value where others do not.
I liked seeing examples of sales in Moneyball because it shows sales principles in everyday life. We must know how to do sales even if we are not salesmen.
Hill sells Pitt on his vision for the recruiting and signing strategy that will allow the franchise to maximize the low budget they are dealing with. I agree that so much of the selling in the movie is based around non-sale selling and it’s usually selling themselves and their vision.
I like how Hill uses different metrics and strategies to sign players and bring them into the organization while taking into account the low-budget the organization gives Pitt and Hill to work with. I agree that most of the selling done within the movie is done by Pitt and Hill selling their ideas and what the future can look like with the organization if these players are to sign with the A’s.
