For this purpose, the salesperson should have exceptional communication and persuading skills, to convey the benefits of the product or service to the customer effectively, while answering their questions.”
I found an article on the difference sales and marketing, because I am a marketing major and have a much more experience and knowledge in marketing and the different forms it can come in. When I started looking for jobs for the upcoming fall, many sales jobs come up in the mix of marketing jobs, which made me wonder what really is the difference between the two?
The article starts off by defining both sales and marketing. Marketing is more of an umbrella term that focuses on getting consumers what they need, while focusing on their wants and retaining customers. Whereas sales focuses more on the transaction part of buying and selling, and maintaining the goals of the company itself and meeting quotas.
The main focuses of the article is to say that sales can be seen in many different forms, and marketing can be involved in many different facets in a similar way. “Marketing is about what you convey about your offering, how you communicate the value of your offering to the target audience and why customers should pick it out of all the available options in the market. It is a promotion of the offering through ads using various platforms, such as newspaper, televisions, pamphlets, social media, such as Facebook page, Instagram account, Twitter account, etc.”
For the sales section of this article, their is a big focus on the different skills that salespeople must have, “Sales is nothing but the primary aim of any business enterprise, in the sense that all the activities of a company are directed towards the increase of sales. Basically it encompasses the activities which result in the selling of “what the company offers to its customers” in a given period of time, by convincing the customers that buying the company’s product will be beneficial for them.
This is an interesting point you make. I also am interested in marketing and learning what the difference between marketing and sales is helpful for distinction. Marketing attracts the customer and sales is the act of selling.
Kate I really like the topic you chose because I have also wondered that same question while looking for different things such as interviews. I really like how the article depicts the two so differently. It makes sense to me that selling is the actual act of buying and the transaction while marketing is sort of the thing that that got the customer there in the first place. Both seem to go hand in hand.
Hey! Thanks for doing the heavy lifting and looking into this. I’ve often wondered the same thing but never took the time to fully understand the in-depth reasons as to why. I’ll take a look at the article listed above too. With this definition in mind, I can start to see the personality differences between the two categories as well. Keep up the good work.
You make a good point. I’ve never thought about how similar the two terms can be, yet so different. I do like the definitions you provided because it makes it clear to me how to differentiate the two. While both may target the same audience, marketing is communicating value while sales is persuading them that this is the right option to buy.
