A recent sales experience I had was in class on Friday. Now this might be a stretch, but a story worth telling nonetheless. Friday was a beautiful day and I was extremely tired from OB wakeups. I knew that if I had to sit in a dark Hal classroom, I would have fallen asleep mid-lecture, it had already happened earlier that day in Global Business Issues. So this being the state of affairs, I devised a devious plan. I was aware of the outdoor classroom in the backside of Hal, and that if we could get the class to go outside for that day, then the bright sun and the wind would help keep me awake for the lecture.

My plan started this way: I have been getting to know Elise Schlemeier, and I know that her relationship with Dr. Sweet is a fun one. The plan that I had devised in my head was to talk to Elise and get her to email Dr. Sweet and convince him to have the lecture outside. The only problem was that I didn’t know where she was. I could have sent her a message on Telegram, although I thought that would be a little bit bizarre, so I decided against it. My plan was foiled. Sleepily I walked up the Hal stairs and to my surprise there she was. I found her in an armchair. How serendipitous. She was working hard on homework, and playing with her usual putty. This was the perfect time to interrupt her locked-in-edness.

I walked up and recommended that she email Dr. Sweet to have class outside. I told her it was a wonderful day and that if anyone could convince Dr. Sweet, it would be her.

I was so happy to hear when class started on Friday, that Dr. Sweet was asking if we’d all be interested in going outside.
Thank you Elise for going along with my recommendation and helping me stay awake on Friday. I apologize to everyone who didn’t want to go outside and was too hot. I personally thought it was great.

  1. I loved having class outside! You identified how to best persuade Sweet (your target audience). You knew that Elise was the best person to contact Sweet and ask, so instead of just doing it yourself (which would have been less effective), you found the best channel.

  2. Hey Nathan,
That’s cool, I didn’t feel like doing my stats anyway. And I would definitely say that was a successful sale! You made a sale (me) that then led to another successful sell (outside class)! Glad I could be of service, and I also thought outside class was awesome–March in Grove City quite simply cannot be “too hot”.
