How much does packaging matter? Would you prefer your heirloom seeds to arrive in a plain brown envelope or like it came from times past, with a few splashes of color? Below is how our seeds recently arrived from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. (www.rareseeds.com)
As you can see, this is no ordinary envelope. When you first see it in your mailbox, it brings to mind the seeds that you successfully grew last year. The packaging is eye-catching. It also helps the Baker Creek brand to look like it is different than the rest, because they place enough value on their brand to put time and likely money into making their packaging attract attention. As a buyer, it also makes me think of their catalog, which is full of color and amazing photographs, that makes you want to spend much more money than you have room for plants in your garden.
Many people who purchase seeds from Baker Creek are making these purchases based on the fact that their seeds are heirloom seeds. So this type of packaging does well for the company, reminding the purchaser that their seeds date years back and are a part of history, as may be the drawings on the envelope. Also, you may be able to see that the packaging has some Asian characters. I do not know what they are, but Baker Creek does sell seeds from different parts of the world.
Baker Creek’s amazing design really causes me to enjoy looking at their catalog, and the care they take causes me to think that they likely care as much as they say they do. Thus, selling me more seeds than I may have bought otherwise!
And below are flowers we grew last year, who happen the grace the cover of this year’s seed catalog! As you can see, they look just as wonderful dried, as they do fresh in the catalog! (You can order a free catalog on their website:-) )
