I finally watched Wolf of Wallstreet with a group of my friends for the first time last weekend, here is what I took away from it.
I never understood where everyone got the reference to try and sell a pen until I watched the movie. Selling truly doesn’t have to be that complicated. At least Leonardo Decaprio was able to throw on a Brooklyn accent and pull it off in the penny stock scene because knew how to get personal without having to take his client on a date.
The tactic that was used a lot was confidence. The brokers had a way of talking that would have the clients open themselves up to selling more shares. With this, the client would also feel confident in their decision therefore, having them become recurring client.
However, there was a lot of manipulation and dirty work that went into closing a sale. As we see throughout the film, things go out of hand and get intense. Money is being made but is there anything really being achieved with the relationship between their clients? Maybe, but most of the work that had been done just resulted in going to prison.
Overall, be smart when you’re selling and have confidence with your clients.
Hey! Nice post. I’ve personally never seen this movie but I liked your break down of the sales in it.
Thank you for sharing! I also have never seen this movie. It is interesting how the salespeople used good tactics to learn more about the client, however a good salesperson is not manipulative. It is the goal to come along the client and help them find fit!
