If you are nearing your end of your collegiate career like me, you may be experiencing something similar to what I am about to describe. I have been logging onto LinkedIn, Indeed, Handshake, and other job search sites everyday checking for new job postings of interest. I am a management major and entrepreneurship minor and have interest in a wide range of business jobs. However, I have been experiencing one common occurrence.
A constant flood of Sales job posting!!!
I have seen so many job postings relating to sales. Common sales job titles include Account Manager, Sales Director, Sales Manager, Sales development Representative, Customer Success Manager, Sales Representative, Sales Associate, Inside Sales Representative, Outside Sales Representative, etc.
After the constant flood of sales job postings in my inbox I began to wonder why. Why are there so many opportunities for sales? Well, my initial answer is, “Of course everything we do is sales!” But that doesn’t answer why so many job titles are sales. One of the main reasons being is these jobs have a high attrition rate. Sales jobs often take a generic skills set but a high level of soft skills. Soft skills in sales are of utmost importance. Skills such as relationship building, listening, mimicking, communication, time management, adaptability and other soft skills. There are significant amounts of pressure and outward focus. Sales lead to growth so companies need to put emphasize on sales jobs. Another thought I had about this is another reason for the high velocity of sales jobs is they are present within every company. Sales is not reliant on one certain industry. Sales is in every industry and leads to growth and revenue for all industries. After considering these ideas I became more aware of why my inbox is flooded with sales job postings!
Great post! I agreed that it seemed weird that there are so many sales jobs at first but you did well at explaining that every industry needs a sales department or jobs. Sales jobs will always be one of the most important jobs because its what keeps business alive.
