Why Cross-Training Is the Secret to Running Your Best
It might seem counterintuitive to be training for running by doing a completely different sport, but it is actually one of the best things you can do for your body. Cross-training is when you supplement your running with another activity. Oftentimes cross-training is implemented once a week to allow your body a mini rest day while still getting a good workout in. It is still important to make sure that you are working your body and not taking a full rest day though because cross-training is supposed to be a workout day. The most common activities are swimming or biking but there are other options. The reason most people choose these activities is that they will still work the muscles that you are using while running but in a different way. Swimming is great because it takes weight off your legs and allows them to get a workout in without weight and strain being put on them. This occurs because your body’s buoyancy is what is holding you up instead of your legs like when running. A similar situation occurs with biking, while biking still requires your legs to support your body at some points, it is not as constant as with running. Biking is really good because it works your leg muscles in a way that is similar to running but also is great because biking greatly reduces the risk or injury. There are a few other benefits to cross training besides the immediate benefit of less strain on your legs. Cross-training can help reduce burnout by allowing you to exercise in a different way than just running. Having burnout is bad because it reduces your motivation to run and can cause injury from overworking a certain muscle group. Another benefit of cross-training is that it leads to more overall health in your body. As you do cross-training, it works the muscle groups differently and even hits a few muscles that don’t really get worked during a running workout. This leads to more general health because your body is able to strengthen more muscles. So next time you don’t want to go for a run, think about implementing some cross-training into your week for a new way to workout!
