How to Consume Non-PG Media as a Christian
Hey girl! In today's world, media consumption is an integral part of our daily lives. From movies and TV shows to music and books, we are constantly surrounded by various forms of entertainment. However, as Christians, it can sometimes be challenging to navigate non-PG media while staying true to our faith and values. Here are some thoughtful tips on how to approach this:
1. Set Personal Boundaries
It's important to establish personal boundaries that align with your faith. Consider what types of content you are comfortable with and what you prefer to avoid. This might include setting limits on explicit language, violence, or sexual content. Remember, these boundaries are personal and should reflect your own convictions.
2. Seek Guidance from Scripture
The Bible offers wisdom and guidance on how to live a life that honors God. Verses like Philippians 4:8, which encourages us to think about things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable, can help guide your media choices. Reflecting on scripture can provide clarity and reinforce your decisions.
3. Use Discernment
Discernment is key when consuming any form of media. Before watching a movie or listening to a new album, take a moment to research its content. Reading reviews or checking ratings can give you a better idea of what to expect. Websites like Common Sense Media provide detailed content breakdowns that can be helpful.
4. Engage in Community Discussions
Discussing media choices with fellow Christians can provide valuable insights and support. Whether it's through a church group, online forum, or casual conversations with friends, sharing your thoughts and hearing others' perspectives can help you make more informed decisions.
5. Practice Mindful Consumption
Be mindful of how media affects your thoughts and behavior. If you notice that certain content is leading you away from your values or causing negative emotions, it might be time to reassess your choices. Or if you think it's causing you to fall away from your faith and take too much of your time away from reading the Word and spending time in prayer, it might be a good idea to switch to something else or to cut some media out of your life entirely.
6. Pray for Wisdom
Prayer is a powerful tool in seeking guidance. Ask God for wisdom and discernment in your media choices. Trust that He will help you navigate these decisions in a way that honors Him.
8. Consume for the Right Reason
I think you can consume non-PG content just fine as long as you understand certain parts are wrong, but you enjoy the overarching themes. For example, you can enjoy a movie about serial killers without being one or thinking its ok to be one. Similarly, you can enjoy a movie that has non-martial sex scenes in it as long as 1) you understand that it is not right 2) are not addicted to porn and 3) the movie is not only about sex (there is an actual plot). I believe as Christians we must use the above steps to discern what we believe is too far then consume mindfully.
Navigating non-PG media as a Christian requires thoughtful consideration and a commitment to your values. By setting boundaries, seeking guidance, and practicing discernment, you can enjoy media in a way that aligns with your faith.

I hope this helps as you decide which media you decide you should and shouldn't consume!
