\nI teach Civilization and the Biblical Revelation (HUMA 102) and Christianity and Civilization: Modern and Postmodern Challenges (HUMA 303). I particularly enjoy HUMA 303 because it allows me to encourage students to think historically about how many aspects of modern society \u2013 the sexual revolution, identity politics, consumerism etc. \u2013 are rooted in longstanding historical changes in the culture and thinking of the West.\n
I also teach The Rise of Ancient Christianity for the Department of History and electives on the doctrine of God, on 19^{th<\/sup>-century thought (particularly Marx, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, and Newman), the thoughts of Charles Taylor, and the history of creeds and confessions.\u00a0I confess that these are a bit self-indulgent \u2013 they reflect interests I have had for a long time, connected to the big questions of \u2018Why does today\u2019s church think and speak as she does?\u2019 and \u2018Where does modernity come from?\u2019<\/p>\nWhat is the most important piece of advice you give students to help them succeed?<\/b>
\nWhen engaging any thinker or any person on any issue, the first important thing to do is to understand how and why they think the way they do.\u00a0History helps develop this skill. I always ask the students to ask themselves \u2018If this person we are studying \u2013 Aquinas, Rousseau, Nietzsche, Marx, or whoever \u2013 heard you describe their views, would they recognize themselves?\u2019 I try to model this in the classroom in the way I read texts with students, always trying to expound them fairly and set them in historical context.\n}

He was a professor at Westminster Theological Seminary before joining Grove City College in 2018. Trueman has authored several books, including The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self<\/em>, which is widely recognized. His most recent work, Strange New World<\/em>, is a condensed version of this book.\nTrueman is an ordained minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and has served as pastor of Cornerstone OPC. He has taught at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Nottingham and contributed to First Things<\/em> and Reformation21.
