This post will explain each era and the dominant SEO tactics of each era. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Stone Age of SEO (1990-1995)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point in history, early &#8220;webmasters&#8221; experimented blindly on the internet. SEO did not even exist as a term at this time. It was commonly referred to as &#8220;web promotion&#8221; or &#8220;positioning&#8221;. The dominant SEO tactics of this time were meta keyword tags, keyword stuffing, manual directory submissions, and alphabetical naming tactics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Wild West of SEO (1995-2000)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Every trick and tactic was utilized, regardless of its ethicality. Spammers dominated the SERPs and popular tactics were doorway pages, hidden text, reciprocal link webrings, and meta tag abuse. The earliest evidence of blackhat SEO tactics were used at this time in history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. SEO Gold Rush (2000-2005)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Gold Rush of SEO, popular strategies included buying links from private blog networks, reciprocal linking, buyer footer links, exact-match domains, and submitting to hundreds of directories. This is also when Google began gaining dominance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Industrial Revolution of SEO<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Article spinning, link farms, forum and content spam, and footer link stuffing were increasingly being used in the Industrial Revolution of SEO. Backlinks were used most frequently, and the popular search engines were Google, Yahoo, and Bing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. The Dark Ages (2010-2015)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Google became the biggest search engine. The most dominant SEO tactics were linked networks, disavow files, guest blogging for links, and thin content cleanup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. The SEO Renaissance (2015-2020)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This era was the beginning ethical and white hat SEO practices, like long-form content, EAT: Expertise, Authority, Trust, mobile-first optimization, and structured data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7. The AI Gold Rush (2020-Present)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This era presented something that was brand new to this industry: AI. AI content flooded the internet and search got significantly smarter. AI engines like ChatGPT and Jasper became increasingly popular.
