From a young age, I actively participated in American Heritage Girls. Essentially a faith-based, mission-driven, badge-earning organization like Girl Scouts, (but we don\u2019t like to be associated with them.) Every fall, without fail we were required to sell 30 products from Fat Cat Bakery, with all proceeds going to a designated philanthropic cause, cancer, dying animals, solving world hunger\u2026 etc. I was tasked with going door to door to give my speech with the goal of selling as much as possible. Factor in childish cuteness, my uniform, and the fact that I was selling sweet treats, my sales were good, to say the least. When I got to high school, to fulfill my senior service project I had to raise $4000 to renovate the bathrooms at the church we were meeting in. These particular bathrooms were so far run down, and the church was operating a preschool and hosting many student events, and they desperately needed a refresh. I decided to implement the same door-to-door method of selling to gain funding for this senior project. But this time with a twist\u2026 I went to the fab 40s, a well-known section of my city with some of the nicest homes in Sacramento. Here I knew my plan could go one of two ways, either I could have a huge success, or I might have to deal with stuck-up rich people. Maybe it was the time of day, maybe I was really nice, maybe it was the uniform, maybe it was my speech and my cause, but I gained $6000 in three days of walking 8 blocks between 2-6 pm. So I\u2019d say it was a huge success. The church ended up having two beautiful new bathrooms and a watering fountain. It was a beautiful opportunity to connect with people and sell to them for a good cause that made an impact on so many lives of young students and teachers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
