My senior year of high school I had the opportunity to interview for a job that sold life insurance; my brother referred me to this company as he had already interviewed and wanted to work alongside me. At this point in my life, I had never had a job or interviewed for anything, so I was new to the sales scene. From what I knew about interviews was that the employer would ask me questions about myself, and I would answer honestly and ask questions back and hope for the best. Little did I know that an interview was actually the first sale. The employer’s name was Jack, and he was my age, 18 years old and seemed very successful and I wanted to get like him. He showed me his alleged bank account, and it read 6 figures and he told me that if I were to join their team, I would be earning the same within 6 months. Was it a scam? I don’t know but what I do know was that he manipulated me into believing that I was meant to have this job and work alongside him and essentially become a millionaire within a few years. After a 3-hour interview process, I found myself signing papers and paying a $200 deposit for something I didn’t even know what it was for. Jack sold himself and the ‘benefits’ that the company had given him, to me, and I fell for it. I ended up calling my mom and asking her what to do because I felt overstimulated about the whole thing and she genuinely flipped out on me. She asked me how I could be so naive and fall for a salesman’s trick and manipulation. I ended up calling the whole thing off with Jack and apologized for wasting his time, but I learned a lot from that 1 interview. I learned that salesman’s jobs are typically to pressure you in to doing what benefits them. I learned later that Jack would’ve gotten a bonus if he brought me onto the team and that’s all he cared about, but I thought he cared about me joining his team.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
