And it is. But if you watch what Jerry Maguire actually does in that phone call, there&#8217;s a layer underneath the shouting that is a textbook Sandler move.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry just lost almost every client he had. He&#8217;s down to one, Rod Tidwell, an NFL wide receiver who is underpaid, undervalued and very angry about both. Rod gets on the phone not to be sold, but to test Jerry. He wants to see if Jerry will actually fight for him or just do the minimum like every other agent he&#8217;s had.<\/p>\n<p>Jerry could have launched into his pitch. Here&#8217;s my plan, here&#8217;s my strategy, here&#8217;s why you should stick with me. Instead he asks a simple question. What do you want? And then he shuts up and listens.<\/p>\n<p>Rod tells him. He doesn&#8217;t just want money. He wants to be seen. He wants respect. He wants somebody in his corner who actually cares. That&#8217;s the real pain, and Jerry finds it in about ninety seconds because he stopped talking and started listening. Sandler Rule #14 is get prospects talking because if they&#8217;re just passively listening, they&#8217;re not buying. Rod wasn&#8217;t passively anything. He was loud and emotional and that&#8217;s exactly what Jerry needed to hear.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;show me the money&#8221; moment gets all the attention but the real close happens earlier. It happens when Jerry demonstrates that he understands what Rod actually needs. Not a contract. Not a press release. Somebody who will go to war for him.<\/p>\n<p>Sandler Rule #38 again. The problem the prospect brings is never the real problem. Rod came in talking about money.
