{"id":1638,"date":"2016-02-09T21:22:39","date_gmt":"2016-02-09T21:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gccwebsites.com\/startupsales\/?p=1638"},"modified":"2016-02-09T21:22:39","modified_gmt":"2016-02-09T21:22:39","slug":"is-sales-a-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gccwebsites.com\/startupsales\/is-sales-a-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Sales a Science?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is sales a science?<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think so.\u00a0 Sales is a skill, not a science.<\/p>\n<p>Coming into our sales class, I felt as though it would be difficult to learn about sales.\u00a0 I have always thought that sales was very influenced by a person\u2019s personality, and if someone doesn\u2019t have the right personality for it, they aren\u2019t going to be great at sales.\u00a0 In the first few weeks of class I have had that conception of sales mostly washed away, but not entirely.<\/p>\n<p>When we discuss sales process and funnels sales take on almost a scientific dimension.\u00a0 In fact, diagrams of sales funnels seem very similar to diagrams of the scientific method hung in an elementary school classroom.\u00a0 It simplifies sales too much when taken completely at face value.\u00a0 Selling is not as easy as 1, 2, 3.\u00a0 It does take a personality dimension, a bedside manner if you will.<\/p>\n<p>As we\u2019ve discussed in class, sales really comes down to the relationship that you can establish with a potential client and solving their needs.\u00a0 In order to be successful in sales, you must build relationships with people and have a personable attitude in your interactions with them.\u00a0 This is definitely learnable, however.\u00a0 It will come to different people with different levels of ease, similar to accounting or baseball, and a person\u2019s aptitude for this particular skill may not be equal to the person next to him.\u00a0 Sales funnels are incredibly useful to a salesman, but not if the salesman doesn\u2019t have the right interactions with clients.<\/p>\n<p>So, no, sales is not a science.\u00a0 It is learnable, and one can take scientific-like approaches to sales using processes and funnels, but without the right interpersonal skills they will be ineffective.\u00a0 Processes, funnels, and diagrams are tools in the tool belt of a salesperson, they may even <i>be<\/i> the tool belt, but those alone will not make the sale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is sales a science?
