{"id":349,"date":"2015-02-09T23:15:11","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T23:15:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gccwebsites.com\/startupsales\/?p=349"},"modified":"2015-02-09T23:15:11","modified_gmt":"2015-02-09T23:15:11","slug":"getting-to-know-the-customer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gccwebsites.com\/startupsales\/getting-to-know-the-customer\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting To Know The Customer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my experience\u00a0in dealing with customers, one thing seems to make a huge difference. \u00a0The better you know the customer, the better your interactions will be. \u00a0You can do this in many ways. \u00a0One way is to talk to the customer and share in their lives. \u00a0Care about them. \u00a0Ask them how their family is. \u00a0How they did last hunting season. \u00a0The list goes on and on. \u00a0The hard part is finding out about them. \u00a0Many people put up a defense around new people. \u00a0As you talk to them you can eventually break through this barrier. \u00a0In my experience, I&#8217;ve found that the best way to do this is to listen. \u00a0Get the customer to start talking and simply listen. \u00a0Most people will talk about themselves for a long time. \u00a0Everyone loves talking about themselves. \u00a0When I did this I would sometimes speak to them to share a similar experience or ask a further question, but mostly I would listen. \u00a0This was an immense tool in building trust. \u00a0Then, the next time you see the customer, you can ask them about the things that they told you. \u00a0Their family, the things that interest them, the things they are struggling with, etc.<\/p>\n<p>I had the unique experience of practicing this strategy when I was not in a selling position. Through the promotional events of my family business I would meet new customers (mostly our key customers) and talk with them. \u00a0Although they were buying from the family business, they were not buying from me as I was not in a selling position. \u00a0Also since it was mostly during promotional events, the climate was relaxed and personal. \u00a0Through this I was able to develop many friendships. \u00a0Now, when I am working on the counter, and a customer I know calls up or walks in, there is an instant connection between us. \u00a0I can talk to them more easily and they trust me. \u00a0It makes the experience more rewarding and pleasurable for both parties.
