I have been working in a remote position part-time while at\nschool, which requires me to create instructional and marketing videos\ndemonstrating a startup\u2019s digital product. Back in February, I negotiated my\nhourly wage with a hiring manager. When she asked me what wage I thought would\nbe fair, I threw out a number I knew was too high for a startup to pay an intern:\n$30 an hour. As I expected, she was shocked and rejected my suggestion instantly,\ncommenting that the company was paying other interns half that rate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The principle of \u201csticker shock\u201d instructs salespeople to ask\nquestions like, \u201cWhat if I were to tell you that sometimes this can cost\u2026?\u201d I\nfound this method to be useful in my negotiations with the hiring manager. I\nsaid (truthfully), \u201cI think you should be aware that at my previous internship,\nmy company was paying several hundred dollars to another company for every\nminute of completed video.\u201d The manager was stunned once again. Finally, she\noffered me $20 an hour. I accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By proposing a number that I knew was unreasonable, I was\nable to negotiate a wage that is $5 an hour greater than what the company\u2019s\nother interns (unbeknownst to them) are earning for doing the same work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSticker shock\u201d and \u201creality check\u201d helped me to secure the\nhighest hourly wage I have ever earned.
