Tools and Materials
Markers, pens, pencils and sharpies all make art come to life. Different kinds of paper, thick or thin all have a unique effect on the writing tool. Art would not be existent without its materials. However, there are helpful tools and materials that are better than others. How do you know which ones to choose? Which tools are best for you?
Writing Tools
Honestly, it all comes down to personal preference. People prefer different writing tools. Zentanglers can enjoy sharpies, pencils or pens as their writing tool. Sharpies can be preferred because of their strong presence on the page. There are zentangle specific pens that have different sized tips that are very effective for detail-oriented patterns. The most popular of those brands is Micron. Micron pens have a variety of point sizes and contain long lasting ink. Micron pens can be used in every zentangle because of their attention to detail with their small point size. (or large depending on the pen you grab) Using a pencil is a great way to start zentangles as a beginner. It will be easy to erase mistakes, and you will have less pressure on creating a line perfectly on the first try. However, it is important to move away from erasing lines. Part of the beauty in zentangle is being able to take a mistake and turn it into something beautiful that fits in with the rest of the piece. Using pens is a great way to practice creativity in zentangles.
Canvas Materials
Picking a canvas is often easier than picking a utensil. Your canvas will depend on your utensil. For example, if you try out a sharpie as your utensil, do not use thin paper. The ink will bleed, and you will lose your detailed design. For sharpie zentangles, purchasing a sketchbook from Canson with the mixed media option will give you great success. Canson has an array of sketchbooks that work well with zentangles. Cardstock works as a strong source that enhances the zentangles to make it look more professional. Most paper materials work well with zentangle, it is hard to go wrong in any direction choosing a canvas for your zentangles.
