In class, we have spent an extensive amount of time discussing how crucial it is to have a clear understanding of your target user. It is something that I understood was important but didn’t fully understand how much actually goes into the process and how specific you must be.
Defining your target market is not only identifying the ideal visitor, but it also involves determining what type of person they are, what motivates them, and how they operate on the Internet. When you fully grasp this idea, that is when your SEO work has truly paid off. According to the Search Engine Journal, “When SEO is centered around the right audience, targeted traffic increases, which leads to more conversions”.
Researching and analyzing your audience does, however, require a lot of work and can be challenging. There are several methods to make this process much easier. In addition to the numerous resources mentioned in class, SEO experts at the Search Engine Journal suggest seven methods of diving deeper into your audience in order to receive a more relevant website traffic:
- Use keywords to gather information on demographics using applications such as Google Trends
- Identify who is currently visiting your website through Google Analytics
- Analyze other brands and competitors
- View social platforms in order to gain social insights
- Send out surveys
- Identify questions people are asking using tools such as “Also Asked” and “Answer the Public”
- Further your research with secondary data
These seven methods seem to be excellent tools for clearly discovering who the main target of your website is and what type of people will be your end user. Although the research that goes into this process of diving into your audience can seem like a lot of extra work, it will be well worth the time put into it. In the end, it will improve your website traffic and your overall SEO work.
