Long-Tail Keywords and SEO

Long-tail keywords are becoming increasingly more important to SEO. Knowing how to best optimize long key phrases as opposed to individual keywords can help your content reach a higher SE ranking. Below are some tips to help with this strategy.

  1. Start small, gain traction

It is best to keep keyword phrases as simplistic as possible. Typically, when users are searching these types of phrases, they have a very specific intent behind the search. For instance, instead of googling the word “meditation”, someone with a specific intent might search “best practices associated with meditation training.”

2. Stay relevant and build your presence

It is crucial to stay consistent with the selected core competencies. Stick with producing keyword phrases that are most associated with your content/brand image.

3. Define your goals

Prior to content generation, understand what the main objectives are to earn organic ranking positions.

4. Conduct thorough research

Knowing who the target audience is will prepare a person to create content that is relevantly positioned for his target market.

5. Don’t get hung up on search traffic

Sometimes declining search volume can be a concern. Long-tail keyword searches can help increase understanding “gaps in your audiences knowledge” (Brain 2).

6. Combine your keywords

Blending related keywords can increase search rank as opposed to stand alone keywords.

7. Cluster closely related articles

8. Scale up

It is important to think long-term by consistently engaging in idea generation, research, content creation and optimization.

9. Optimize

Once sufficient content has been established on the internet, Google Search Console data can help in the discovery phase to see how users are responding to a company’s content.

These seem like very helpful tips for an effective approach to long-tailed keywords. One that stood out to me was staying relevant and building a presence. Climbing the ranks is the goal but it’s also crucial to be able to maintain the position earned. I feel like if you can do that then your presence will grow and your target audience will be reached.
