The SEO of Spotify

The goal of Spotify and really any music service is to tune the listener’s experience to their favorite artists and genres. When you first create an account they ask you to pick your favorite artist and genres. This helps to build a custom foundation that will be fined tuned as they listen to music. From the perspective of the artist though. They have three ways to be found. 1. Found on playlists. 2. Featured by Spotify (Home page or Playlists). 3. Found via search. Being found via search is obviously a lot harder for smaller artists. However, creating a strong brand and social media presence can help them catch up. Also having a bold cover photo can help create clicks. Same as adding as many keywords as possible (as long as it fits the feel of the song). For example, if the song is upbeat, then perhaps put a “workout” tag on it.

Using the Spotify For Artists tool can help with giving the artist more credibility and a better-intergraded profile. The tools also give demographic data such as gender and age. This helps see who the audience is so they can better appeal to them

It’s really interesting to hear about Spotify from the artist’s perspective, and about the use of tags for SEO purposes!

Very cool to learn about a streaming service and how it works from an artist’s perspective. I would probably argue for smaller artists, less known, they probably get searched more than any other way of finding them. But very nice to see this different perspective.

Spotify definitely requires an SEO strategy if a young or small artist wants to reach their listeners. Being found on playlists or the home page are two things that I agree with that can strengthen your music presence.
