Link Building: Best Practices in 2023

Link building is on the most important aspects of SEO. However, it has become more and more difficult throughout the years. This is because the internet, and people who use it, are ever evolving. This constant change challenges us to examine link building every year. These are the best practices, according to an article I read, in 2023.

1. Look for potential links in competitor backlink profiles. This is the first step and the easiest and that is to look at your competitors. Successful sites have already done plenty of their own link building. Their backlink profiles are filled with domains that are interested in linking to sites like theirs – and like yours. Those domains just don’t know about you yet. But that can change, and this change is up to you.

2. Turn unlinked mentions into links. The next area for linking is easy as well. It requires some other site that has mentioned your product or name, then contact a person that can edit the website in order to add your link to that website.

3. Create unique sources of valuable data. This way is a bit harder than the rest; it involves making content that people want to link to. This requires you to understand your audience, then make relatable and relevant content to that audience.

4. Offer to replace other sites’ broken links. Often there are sites with broken links. This requires you to offer your service of replacing that site, but again the content must be relevant. Here’s how it works: you visit another site and see a broken link. Did it previously point to a content piece that was similar to something you have? If yes, feel free to step in and offer your own content.

6. Get involved in events & projects. For this step, you should continue creating as much good content as you can. But you can also help other people create their content or support an event – that’s bound to earn you a mention, at the very least. There’s no shortage of things and events where the organizers could use a hand. Real-life contests, online events, even a YouTube video – if it’s some kind of ambitious project.

7. Offer your expertise to other websites. Look for websites where your input can bring value. Reach out to those sites’ content makers (unless they contact you first), and then you can: Write guest articles, give interviews, get published in online journals, participate in podcasts.

As you can see there are many ways to improve your link building. Some are easier than other, but all are proven to work. Now it’s your job to decipher for which one would work best with your site.

Great post! I agree that a big part of link building is looking at other site’s broken links. This shows you what competing sites have linked to, and you may be able to get a good link just by reaching out to one of those websites.
