WordPress Tips for Photographers

If you are creating a photography website on WordPress, there are many tips that you should be aware of to optimize your content.

  1. Enable HTTPS on Your Site

This ensures that your site is safe and any visitors can trust it. Google has stated that users with HTTPS enabled will have preference over those who don’t. To enable this, you’ll have to install a WordPress plugin such as Really Simple SSL.

2. Use an SEO Plugin

This is another great way to improve your site’s SEO use. In the article I read, they recommend RankMath, which is free and includes tools like keyword optimization, XML sitemaps, and social media integration.

3. Check Your Page Speed

Google has introduced something called Core Web Vitals which are metrics that Google likes to look at to see whether a page is fast enough and provides a good user experience for the user. If you have a slow website, it is not good for SEO. If you want to see your score, you can pick a few different pages on your site and paste them into Google Page speed Insights.

4. Use Keywords Strategically

Using specific keywords in your posts and pages is what sets you apart from your competitors. If you are a landscape photographer, you want to use keywords such as “landscape photos” and “landscape photographer”, etc. Using Google AdWords Keyword Planner is a great way to find appropriate keywords for your website. It is important to also use keywords in your title and in alt text of your images.

5. Internal and External Links

Internal links are when you link to other posts on your site that you have written, and are extremely useful for improving crawlability of your site. They also help tremendously with user experience.

External links (also called backlinks) are when you link to other sites. These are helpful because they show your sites credibility. You can reach out to other sites and ask them to link to your site, or sometimes, sites will find you and link to you on their own.

By following these steps, you will be able to increase the effectiveness of SEO on your site, and ultimately attract more users to improve your business.

It is definitely important to consider loading time for a website dense with photos. If the photos are slow to load and slow the site’s processing time, people will become frustrated very quickly and leave for another site.
