Have you ever heard of Structured Data?

If you’re like me, you may be scratching your head with no clue what it means. Is it just another way of showing data in a table? Adding a specific format to coding? Well… Sort of… It’s a fancy term for yet another tool that can give you a leg up in the SEO industry.

What is structured data?

Structured data is a code you can generate and add to your website in order to make it stand out at the top of a SERP. It gives more information to the user about your website rather than simply showing a link and an H1 title. Check out an example below.

Example of Structured Data Results

In this case of searching for birthday cakes, Google has displayed the image, star rating, total cook time, and ingredients directly into the search results. This is much more attractive and informative than any other bland link (as shown below).

How do I implement it?

  1. Go to Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper Tool.
  2. Select a data type – Choose the option that best fits your content. And then paste your page link in the URL box at the bottom of the screen. Click “Start Tagging”.
  3. You’ll see a split screen where the right side is your page and the left side is a list of fields you can tag. Highlight anything on the right that aligns with a tag and choose that tag on the left (ex: author, image, title, etc)
  4. Once you have tagged everything you wish, click the red “Create HTML” button on the upper right corner.
  5. You’ll see a pop-up with your structured data code. Copy that code and paste it to the <head> section of your HTML.

YAY you’re done!
