Netflix is one of the largest video streaming platforms in the world today with 247.15 million subscribers. Despite being similar in price to other streaming platforms like Amazon Prime and Hulu, Netflix is preferred by 47% of Americans over other platforms. The biggest reason why consumers choose Netflix over the multitude of other streaming services is for their branding.
Netflix is run with customer needs in mind. In June of 2015, Netflix redesigned its website with a newer look, having darker colors and a sleeker design. In order to figure out if this redesign would be beneficial in terms of user experience, Netflix collected and analyzed data from a number of sources, including viewer history, feedback, surveys, and user ratings. They used this data to create different customer personas and segments so they could tailor the content that they offer to different customers and groups of people.
Netflix utilizes search engine optimization in order to rank higher in search results. They use key words and phrases like “watch movies”, “watch online”, and “tv online”, as well as precise header tags to improve the readability of the site and boost the page rankings. The brand of Netflix has become so popular that many people simply say that they are going to ‘watch Netflix’, instead of saying that they are going to watch a certain show on Netflix. They have created so much value that customers have bought into the brand, and not just the products, or in this case the movies and tv shows, that Netflix offers.
Netflix has optimized its online presence through effective search engine optimization strategies and has become one of, if not the most successful online streaming service today. The effective use of keyword research and relevant, high-quality content has allowed it to achieve prominent placement in search engine results. Netflix has enhanced the user experience for people looking to stream movies and tv shows online, and their subscription fee has allowed it to grow into the multi-billion-dollar company that is today.

I never considered how streaming platforms use SEO to direct traffic to their platform. I can imagine SEO is an important part of many streaming platforms’ marketing strategies because they are dealing with such a competitive market. It makes sense that Netflix would be effective at optimizing its content for Google considering it is one of the most prominent competitors in the industry.
I never thought that SEO would be such a big part of Netflix’s way of branding. However in retrospect, it makes a lot of sense due to the market they are in becoming more and more competitive every day.
I have never thought about the SEO that goes into Netflix. It does seem like an immense amount goes into it, so it’s a wonder I have never thought about the amount of effort that goes into the SEO for any streaming platform. Very interesting blog post, now I’m interested in doing some of my own research.
