Let’s Talk About Black and White Hat SEO!

Black-Hat-SEO-vs-White-Hat-SEO

This week we discussed the concept of Black Hat SEO and White Hat SEO! As someone new to SEO, this was a concept I had not heard of. The images of the two different hats help to keep the methods separated since you should follow the white hat SEO practices and stay away from the black hat SEO practices. Now, what is the difference between Black Hat and White Hat SEO? Let’s dig into that!

Black Hat SEO is based on practices and methods that are used to increase a particular page’s rank in the search engine through methods that break the search engine’s terms of service. Do you know why the term “black hat” is used? Well, in western movies, the “bad guys” were always distinguished from the “good guys” by wearing black hats. The “good guys” would always wear white hats, leading to White Hat SEO. White Hat SEO is whenever the methods used are within the search engine’s terms of service. These methods work to improve the search engine results page of a site while following those terms of service.

Although the definitions and concepts of White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO make sense, it was not until I saw the more specific techniques used that it made more sense! Let’s look at some comparisons between the two different methods!

When it comes to Black Hat SEO, the techniques used, but not limited to, include:

  • Keyword Stuffing
  • Doorway and Cloaked Pages
  • Creating Blog Content Spam
  • Hidden Texts
  • Hidden Links
  • Participating in Link Schemes

When it comes to White Hat SEO, the techniques used, but not limited to, include:

  • Research
  • Analysis
  • Rewriting of meta tags to be more appropriate
  • Improvement of content
  • Redesign web
  • Having fast page loading times
  • Prioritizing Mobile-Friendliness

It can be so easy to fall into the traps of Black Hat SEO, but by knowing the techniques used, it can help you to avoid them! Stick with White Hat SEO, which improves credibility, contains relevant backlinks, and can achieve a high ranking through organic means. Black Hat SEO is not approved by search engines, so stay far away!

I love your graphic! Your post was engaging and easy to read. I like how you gave bullet points for each type of hat. I had also never heard of Black Hat SEO or White Hat SEO before class, I like the hat illustration though, because a black top hat looks suspicious and evil.
