What is SEO? A Practical Guide

This week for my Search Engine Optimization blog post, I wanted to use an article from wordstream. I chose wordstream because I used that site for my keyword research draft last week and I found the information really interesting. The article is talking about what SEO is an provides a guide to start using SEO in your business. Search engine optimization is the most cost-effective and efficient ways that you can drive traffic to your website. A lot of people don’t actually know how it works or how it can work for their specific goals. Organic search is an important and highly used marketing channel where SEO should be utilized. The article provides a formal definition of SEO stating “Search engine optimization is a set of technical and content practices aimed at aligning a website page with a search engine’s ranking algorithm so it can be easily found, crawled, indexed, and surfaced in the SERP for relevant queries”. This definition is very helpful but can be a little bit wordy and confusing. The article provides a very simple definition to help everyone understand the basis of this topic. “SEO is what you do to rank higher on Google and get more traffic to your site”. While this definition is very succinct, it gets to the heart of the definition and goal. There are numerous benefits to using search engine optimization and this article has laid out four main benefits. The first benefit is more website traffic, next is more customers, then better reputation, and finally higher ROI (return on investment). The article then goes in to describe various types of SEO. The first type is on-page SEO and the second type of off-page SEO. When using these together, you can greatly improve your sites traffic and conversions. By learning more about SEO and using these tool, a company can cheaply and quickly improve their sales and traffic in an ethical and practical way!
