YouTube Search Optimization for Video Content

YouTube Search Optimization for Video Content

Knowing the YouTube search algorithm is important for any video content creators. Regardless of whether a video is informational, building a brand, or designed to sell products, working with the algorithm is essential to having it ranked. Video creators that know what the search algorithm is looking for can push their content to more relevant users. It’s the same concept as Google’s SERP, but doing so for videos looks a bit different.

Titles, Descriptions, and Tags

The title tag is the single most important piece of information for a user to determine whether they want to click on a video. The title must sum up the video with relevant keywords. YouTube search algorithms factor in the title, but it must also be compelling to human users.

Descriptions are another similar factor. YouTube provides content creators with a space to describe what the video is about. Sometimes it’s filled with product recommendations or irrelevant promotional content, but using the description wisely is essential. It should contain keywords, describe the video content, and/or provide additional information relevant to the video. Similarly, tags exist to sort content into different categories. Users can search these tags, but they are also helpful for the algorithm.

Choosing Keywords for Videos

Most of the rules of keyword research and selection stay the same for video content. The keywords belong in the title, description, and tags. Currently YouTube offers an autocomplete feature that can pull out suggested keywords from the video itself. Google Trends and similar tools are helpful for finding keywords that align with the video content. As always, user intent is still the most important factor.

Other YouTube Search Tips: Thumbnails, Accessibility, and Engagement

One overlooked YouTube search optimization strategy is designing a good thumbnail. The thumbnail has the potential to be as informative and important for users as title tags. Ensuring that it is well designed can impact click-through rates, and in turn, rankings.

Video transcripts and closed captions are two accessibility features that can help the YouTube algorithm to understand the video content better. Sometimes YouTube provides their own closed captions on the video, but these are not always accurate or true to the intent.

Finally, anyone who’s ever used YouTube is probably familiar with the video creator’s call to action of “please like, comment, and subscribe!” This is not just for popularity. Engagement metrics like those are some of the most important ranking factors. A crucial aspect of video SEO is ensuring that viewers interact with the content in a measurable way.

YouTube is a fascinating example of where SEO can and should be applied, especially considering just how crucial the YouTube algorithm is in determining the success of content creators. The importance of the thumbnail is also interesting and has been exemplified by the sheer amount of research and testing some of the larger creators have done regarding thumbnails.

YouTube having their own version of SEO makes total sense, both considering it is essentially it’s own search engine, along with the fact that it’s owned by Google. It can certainly help people find the exact video they are looking for.
