Do Keywords Still Matter in SEO?

One question I keep coming back to while learning about SEO is whether keywords still matter as much as people say they do. In the past, it seemed like ranking on Google was mostly about putting the right keywords in the right places and repeating them enough times to signal relevance. But search engines today are far more advanced, which makes me wonder if that old strategy still applies. From what I’ve been learning, keywords absolutely still matter, but not in the simple, mechanical way they once did. Search engines no longer just scan for repeated words; they try to understand intent. That means they are analyzing what someone is really looking for when they type something into the search bar, not just matching exact phrases. Because of this, stuffing a blog post with the same keyword repeatedly does not improve rankings and can actually hurt the quality of the content. If a post sounds unnatural or forced, readers will likely leave quickly, which sends negative signals back to search engines.

At the same time, ignoring keywords completely would also be a mistake. Keywords still provide structure and direction. They help search engines categorize your content and help readers immediately understand what the topic is about. The difference now seems to be how naturally those keywords are used. Instead of forcing them into every sentence, they should appear in ways that make sense within the flow of the writing. I also find the concept of long-tail keywords interesting because they focus more on specific questions rather than broad terms. For example, targeting a phrase like “Do keywords still matter in SEO?” may reflect clearer intent than just targeting “SEO.” Overall, it seems that while keywords are still important, clarity, usefulness, and understanding what the user wants are even more important. SEO today feels less about tricking the algorithm and more about genuinely helping people find the answers they are searching for.

    This is an excellent post. Keyword stuffing use to be such a common tactic in SEO that many in the older generation still believe it is important for ranking success. This is just not the case anymore because google will flag sites with keyword stuffing. We still need keywords throughout the site to help the ranking but we can not overstuff a site with them. I enjoyed reading your post!
