At the end of 2025 and as we begin 2026, we joined one of the largest tech revolutions: the uprise of AI being used in our everyday lives. This raises an important question though: what is the future of SEO in the upcoming years?
In the past, the most common response to a “what does this mean?” question was often, “Google It.” Now, that has more often become, “Ask ChatGPT.” While the two (Google vs. ChatGPT) accomplish similar goals, it is important to note that they are very different, and the ways that you optimize your website for Google is vastly different than doing so for an AI. There are multitudes of ways to optimize your site for AI — far too many to mention in this one post — but there is one big way that could potentially lead to the downfall of SEO, or at least a reform in how SEO is done. This is the use of keywords.
As you probably know, keywords are essentially the backbone of SEO, however we need to understand that with the personalized aspect of AIs, using specific keywords, and also more broad keywords are very important for optimizing your site for AI. Whenever I use AI, I often will elaborate on what I am asking for, prompting the AI to continue looking at whatever I asked and narrowing it down.
That said, it is vital that you use proper keywords and phrases on your website that would be likely similar to what your end user would enter into an AI. If it can find that phrase exactly, chances are it would link back to your site.
